A new tool to measure the relationship between health-related quality of life and workforce productivity.

A new tool to measure the relationship between health-related quality of life and workforce productivity.

$49.99

Quality of life and productivity are two important measures in health outcomes that usually require the use of self-reported surveys for accurate assessment. Measuring health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has been established as an important field in the past century, and many psychometrically validated instruments exist for both general and specific population use. Another health measure that has attracted a significant amount of attention in recent years, although there is no gold standard, is that of workforce productivity. Most productivity studies measure the amount of work loss incurred by employees in the form of absenteeism and presenteeism.;A new survey that combines questions from existing HRQOL and workforce productivity surveys, the Health-Related Quality of Life and Work Productivity Questionnaire (HQWP), was constructed and tested using a descriptive, cross-sectional study of faculty and staff at a major research university. As expected, HRQOL and work loss were found to be negatively correlated. In addition, staff were found to have statistically higher levels of absenteeism than faculty, but faculty had higher levels of presenteeism. Using multivariate regression models on several measures of productivity, including both absenteeism and presenteeism, we concluded that mental health measures were stronger predictors of productivity than physical health measures for our overall sample, as well as faculty and staff groups separately. In addition, those who work extra hours to make up for lost production had significantly lower social function scores compared to those who do not. Other statistical analyses performed include PCA factor analyses on presenteeism covariates. Lastly, we performed economics analyses on the cost savings that could be achieved through health management programs to reduce absenteeism and presenteeism levels.;A better understanding of reasons for absenteeism and presenteeism could help inform targeted workplace programs to

Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America, March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791: Correspondence: Second Session, July-October 1790

$125

Through decades of searching, the First Federal Congress Project has collected primary material documenting the debates, decisions, and thoughts of the members of the First Federal Congress. The volumes of the Documentary History of the First Federal Congress permit Congress and its staff, historians, political scientists, jurists, educators, students, and others to understand the most important and productive Congress in United States history. Three new volumes present letters written by and to members of the First Federal Congress during its Second Session, as well as communications from other informed individuals at the seat of government in New York City during late 1789 and 1790. The correspondence brings the official record to life by providing details about the often informal political means by which Congress accomplished its agenda. During this session, the Congress addressed the two most divisive issues facing the young nation: funding the debts from the Revolutionary War (particularly the debts incurred by the individual states) and determining locations for both the temporary and permanent seats of the federal government. It resolved these difficult issues through the Compromise of 1790, silencing sectional threats of disunion for the immediate future. A rich source of information about the members of Congress, their lives in New York, their concerns about their families, and the services they performed for their constituents, the documents from these three new volumes will also be incorporated into The Early Republic, an innovative online reference hosted by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

$49.99

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine if the senior leadership at the six California community colleges with the highest rates of student progress and achievement adhered to eight New Sciences Exemplars, derived from chaos theory, quantum physics, and self-organizing systems. Theoretical framework. The theoretical foundations for this study are based on the research foundations of: Chaos Theory, Quantum Physics, and Self-Organizing Systems. Methodology. This qualitative study used an exploratory and descriptive-comparative, multi-case study approach; qualitative interviewing was used to collect primary data, and the California Accountability Reporting for Community Colleges (ARCC) report was used to collect secondary data. The subjects in the study were 21 senior administrators (Presidents and Vice-Presidents) who responded to twelve interview questions. Findings. Senior leadership described their organizations as either completely or primarily dynamic in nature. They set high expectations for staff. They valued trust-based relationships among themselves, and believed that they were part of a healthy and supportive team. Senior management modeled desired organizational behavior. They used many channels for information exchange. Senior leadership regarded it as essential to employ flexible, intelligent leaders with diverse backgrounds and broad bases of experience. They gave their departments as much autonomy as possible. They welcomed change, and regarded it as essential for their organization's self-preservation. They chose their words carefully, and took care to get day-to-day decisions correct. Senior management believed that communicating an overarching vision was more important than focusing on the administrative details of governing. Conclusions and recommendations. Senior management adheres to the eight New Science Exemplars. Further research is advised: a cross-sectional, quantitative study of many, it not all, of the community

Nurses' work environment and job satisfaction.

Nurses’ work environment and job satisfaction.

$69

Background. Transforming nurses’ work environment has become a concern for nurses, hospital administrators, policy makers, and consumers. Magnet Hospital accreditation is increasingly recognized as a symbol of hospitals that promote a positive nursing work environment which supports quality patient care and nurse satisfaction. While research from nursing, organizational, patient safety, and occupational health perspectives has examined many work environment factors, no research has simultaneously examined the effect of Magnet hospital attributes and occupational health models on nurse satisfaction. Purposes. (1) explore the relative influence of the Magnet hospital attributes and psychosocial work environment models on nurses’ job satisfaction, and (2) identify the potential moderation effects of occupational health models. Methods. Using a cross-sectional design, the study examined baseline data from the European Nurses Early Exit (NEXT) Study, a multi-country study of nurses’ work conditions and turnover conducted between 2002 and 2005. Registered staff nurses working in acute care settings from 31 hospitals in Belgium and Germany (N=3182) were studied. Measurement models were established using structural equation modeling and a multilevel approach that accounts for the nesting of nurses within hospitals. Magnet hospital attributes [MH] and job satisfaction [JS] were modeled as latent factors and demand-control-support [DCS] and effort-reward imbalance [ERI] were modeled as latent classes. Analysis was conducted with Mplus 4.21 and SPSS 12.0. Results. Consistent with findings in other countries, about 70% of these European hospital nurses reported high job demand and 40% reported high job strain. Variation in satisfaction was significantly explained by most MH attributes. At the individual level, personnel policies (primarily representing pay and organizational support) had the strongest influence on satisfaction. At the hospital level, management style had the
