What martial arts should a forensic major take?

Hello! I am majoring in Chemisty with a forensics option and hoping someday to get into some type of law enforcement. Even though i probably will not go into the field much i was wondering what kind of martial art everyone would recommend for fbi or police. Also i was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a concealed weapons license or some type of guns license (i have not used a gun much and i am going to take a gun safety course…just wondered if i should go further than that) thanks for the input!

The martial art one studies is not as important as the martial artist. How one approaches one’s studies determines one’s success, and whether or not something which is essentially taught as a sport can still be useful for self-defense.

Don’t let Brazilian Jiujitsu’s current success in UFC and “mixed martial arts” competitions fool you. Look at the rules, they’re designed to increase safety, the exact opposite of what a true martial artist wants to do. While jiujitsu as a self-defense art is time honored and battle proven, the current emphasis on groundfighting and submissions would be suicidal in a multiple opponent situation. While you’re grappling one opponent, what are his buddies doing? Also, as you’re choking out someone (an illegal move for police) what’s to stop the “perp” from smashing your groin, fish-hooking your mouth, or gouging your eyes out, if “Big John McCarthy” isn’t there to rule it an “illegal technique”?

Study what appeals to you, and practice it with courage and perseverance. I started full-contact karate 36 years ago with Shihan Hector Martinez, who taught a brutally effective form of Shotokan/Goju karate. I hated it, because other than the brutal 120 – 150 minute workouts, the sparring was rough and dangerous. I would often puke from the stress before going into class and was lucky I was never carried out of class in a stretcher as were more than a few students. But I never gave up, and each time I made an error in strategy, tactic, or technique, I strived to fix it, working into the wee hours of the morning. Today, almost before I realized it, I am, a 6th degree black belt.

As for shooting skills. Shooting, or rather gunfighting, is the simplest to learn of all fighting arts. Don’t trust your employer to train you adequately. The Bureau or the Department is interested primarily in reducing liability. Survival of individual officers is a secondary issue. The standards for shooting ability of non-specialized law enforcement officers vary considerably from (the worst) the old FBI stand up on your hind legs and shoot a pistol or revolver slow/timed/rapid fire regime through (the best) what is equivalent to a Beginner’s Certification by Chuck Taylor or Gunsite. Be aware that these certifications go from beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, to master and while they indicate a certain amount of shooting speed and skill, they don’t guarantee success or survival in every situation. If you want to learn to survive a shootout, study under one of the top instructors. Then practice your skills in competition, either in IDPA, or USPSA. Visualize many different situations, and analyze what tactics and strategies you would use in each one. To be a good martial artist is not easy.
