Jeet Kune Do – The Insights of Bruce Lee

In trying to understand Jeet Kune Do also referred to sometimes as JKD, one must know the views behind its formation or creator, Bruce Lee. The foundation of this style has rooted from the teachings and philosophies of its founder.

Bruce Lee is one of the most famous icons as a martial artist. He has always been known for his great influence in promoting the martial arts from the Asia culture to the Western culture. Even though he was originally trained in Wing Chun under Yip Man, he did not exclusively live it for the rest of his life. Instead, he developed a new style that has a unique principle from other martial arts. He called this Jeet Kune Do.

Jeet Kune Do means, “the way of the intercepting fist”. Lee calls this, “a style with no style.” When he was teaching Jun Fan Gung Fu, which literally means Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu, he was still living with the principles of Wing Chun with some modifications. He realized one time during a sparring, the techniques using Wing Chun makes for a very long fight and is just a waste of time. He thought that it was so formalistic and inflexible that it failed him to use his full potential. Lee also grew up being involved in street fights, so he realized that there are so many ways in formal martial arts training that are of no use. This was how he conceptualized JKD. He said that in real life fighting, one must fight in a way that he knows. It is using whatever technique that one is able to perform without any regards from where it came from.

It is said that Jeet Kune Do is the precursor of mixed martial arts and MMA techniques. As a hybrid martial arts training, it is syncretic. It incorporates different styles that can be very useful. It is more like that of a freestyle fighting. It does not need to be complicated, it can be simple as the way one knows on how to fight. He said that real fighting is alive and dynamic in nature. Lee combined his modified Wing Chun techniques with some techniques from boxing and fencing.

JKD has four ranges of combat that is necessary for one to learn to become effective. Lee said that kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling are essential in learning his new style. When one is more than good with these four techniques, the more one is able to fight well.

There are a few principles Lee stands to believe. He said that when fighting, be like water. Water can adapt to the shape it fits in. It can be used to destroy and create. He said that flexibility is essential to fights. Next is the economy of motion that is taught to waste no time and movements. Another one is the importance of a strong center line. He said that to be able to have a strong defense and a good execution, one must have a good stance for defense and for opening an opponent’s center line. He also emphasized the philosophy of absorbing what is useful and leaving behind the non-essentials. He refers to flowery techniques that should be cast off because it is of no help in real fights. Lee believed that the combat realism concept is better because in real life situations it helps one to defend oneself and others more effectively.

There are concepts for economy of motion. The stop hits and stop kicks are moves for intercepting an opponent’s attack with another attack instead of a simple block. The simultaneous parrying and punching is redirecting the opponent’s attack then releasing a counter attack. Low kick is another thing for it is hard to detect and to guard against. The important properties of JKD are efficiency, directness, and simplicity. There are five ways to attack an opponent: the Single Angle Attack, the Hand Immobilization Attack, the Progressive Indirect Attack, the Attack by Combinations, and the Attack by Drawing.

Bruce Lee explained that he had not created a “new style” of martial arts that is distinct. This style is actually just a process of fighting. There are printings embedded in the JKD logo which says, ” using no way as a way” and “having limitations with no limitations”. It institutes the idea of not restraining oneself with preconceived thoughts, practice, and any constraints. It is to achieve true freedom in expressing oneself and ones techniques in a free-flowing and spontaneous way.

Jeet Kune Do is primarily an open hand system. The system works on the use of different ‘tools’ for different situations. These situations are broken down into ranges (Kicking, Punching, Trapping and Grappling), with techniques flowing smoothly between them. Also, it is referred to as a “style without style”. Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned, and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. In 2004, the Bruce Lee Foundation decided to use the name Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do () to refer to the martial arts system that Lee founded. “Jun Fan” was Lee’s Chinese given name, so the literal translation is “Bruce Lee’s Way of the Intercepting Fist.” Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is the name Bruce Lee gave to his combat system and philosophy in 1967. Originally, when Lee began researching various fighting styles, he gave his martial art his own name of Jun Fan Gung Fu. However not wanting to create another style
