The World Of Martial Arts
If you are a fan of action movies, then you are sure to have seen at one time or another sequences involving hand to hand combat. Movie goers can see a variety of fighting styles acted out on the screen. Though the techniques of the combatants may appear similar, there are notable differences for each school of fighting. With this in mind, let’s take a look at a closer look at martial arts.
The history of martial arts extends back over many millenniums. No doubt two early hunters exchanged blows over who was going to get the lion’s share of the game they had just taken down. Organized training methodologies reach back over two thousand years. It is believed that the earliest systems had their roots in China and India.
There are a variety of reasons why people pursue instruction in the fighting arts. Some see the vigorous training as a means to get into better physical shape. They strive to increase their strength, agility, and flexibility. Others look to improve their self-defense skills, while still others seek mental and spiritual advancement.
One of the most well known schools is karate. It is a striking art that employs punches, kicks, and elbow and knee blows. Sometimes ‘knife-hands’ are used. These are open-handed strikes. Some styles also teach expertise in grappling, vital organ strikes, body throws, and locks. It was first developed in the 19th century on the island that is now known as Okinawa.
Another popular style is Taekwondo. It has its roots in South Korea. It was developed by the South Korean military in the 1950s. Roughly translated, it means the art of striking with fist and foot. It places a heavy emphasis on kicking. The rationale for this is based on the notion that the leg is the longest and strongest part of the martial artist’s body.
Some people may be surprised that the martial art judo translates to ‘the way of gentleness.’ It is one of the most effective and popular means for self-defense. The underling strategy is to use your opponent’s weight and momentum against him. It relies heavily on body throws and pulling.
Nowadays, the martial arts industry enjoys immense worldwide popularity. For example, it is estimated that over fifty million participate in karate. The number of practitioners in taekwondo is even greater. It is believed that almost seventy million people enjoy partaking in this sport.

Organizations Based in Taiwan: Peking Opera School, Global Initiatives Symposium in Taiwan, Chinese Taipei Amateur Radio League $8.78 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Peking Opera School, Global Initiatives Symposium in Taiwan, Chinese Taipei Amateur Radio League, Hope Workers Center, Taiwan Tech Trek, Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan, Taipei Youth Program Association. Excerpt: The Peking Opera Schools were boarding schools located throughout Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, specialising in teaching Peking opera. The most well known of these schools are those that were based in Hong Kong during the 1950s and 60s, as many of the attending students subsequently embarked on successful careers in the Hong Kong film industry. In learning Peking opera, attending students developed skills in martial arts, acrobatics and tumbling, music and dance and performed these skills for audiences. The schools produced a generation of stunt performers, action choreographers, actors and film directors including some of the most famous stars of Hong Kong action cinema. Public interest in Peking Opera waned in the late 1960s and several of the schools were closed. Historically, pupils had been handpicked at a young age by a teacher (or sifu) and trained for a period of seven to ten years, on contract from their parents. As the teacher provided food and accommodation for the pupils during this period, they accrued a debt to the teacher that was later repaid through performance earnings. After 1911, training took place in more formally organised schools. Typically, students at these schools rose at five o’clock in the morning for exercises. The daytime would be spent learning the skills of acting and combat, and the senior students would perform in outside theatres in the evenings. If they made any mistakes during such performances, it was not uncommon for the entire group to be beaten with bamboo canes. Sch… More: |
